Why do we not use law enforcement officers as instructors?

or the local medical examiner / coroner?

This can be summed up in the simple phrase, been there, done that, wont do it again.

We have in the past hired law enforcement personnel, both those that were still in active duty in the law enforcement community and those were ex-law enforcement.

Do they have more knowledge?

Not really, there seems to be no advantage to these instructors over the instructors working in South Carolina at any driving school.

So why do we not use police officers when there are so many wanting to work for us?

It all boils down to the students. We have found that students do not like to interact with cops. It seems to put them on edge and they find it hard to relax and concentrate on the message (safe driving practices) that is being delivered by the cop instructor.

In our 2011 Drivers Ed classes we repeatedly asked our teen students three questions.

  1. Would you like to be taught by a Police Officer?
  2. Would you like to be shown graphic pictures / videos from accidents?
  3. Would you like to be lectured by the local medical examiner / coroner?

And the results were consistently the same

98% of girls & 87% of boys do not want to be taught by a Police Officer.

95% of girls & 74% of boys do not want to be shown graphic pictures / videos from accidents.

99% of girls & 81% of boys do not want to be lectured by the local medical examiner / coroner.

(this last one is actually illegal in South Carolina under the SC DMV driving school rules and regulations, as only SC DMV licensed instructors are allowed to lecture students)

So why are these methods of teaching being used by some driving schools?

It is our opinion that some parents like the Fear Factor or the Scared Straight approach to teaching their children.

The reality is that the students dont want it, they dont respond well to it and they do not absorb as much information as they would, if they were being taught by friendly non-threatening instructors in a pleasant environment.

As a result of these studies that we conducted we do not use law enforcement as instructors any longer.

We prefer to take a more understanding and non-threatening approach and nurture our students through this learning phase of their lives.
